Frequently Asked Questions for Wedding Cake
Besides cakes, what other types of desserts do you provide?
Cookies, Cupcakes, Groom's Cake
What additional services do you provide?
Consultations, On-site Delivery, On-site Setup, Pickup, Tastings
Do you provide customary cakes, such as Croquembouche?
Yes
Are you licensed by the state health department?
Yes
Do you offer private tastings or open house tastings?
I offer free consultations and tastings by appointment only.
What are your tasting hours?
These vary depending on my schedule for a given week. Earlier in the week is better, although I am sometimes able to meet with prospective brides on Saturdays. These, however, require a credit card to hold the date/time. Sorry, but I've had too many people forget, and Saturdays are my busiest days with wedding cakes and deliveries. I would give your wedding date and cake delivery the same consideration.
Describe how you price, such as by slice or by tier, for your cakes?
I price my cakes per serving and dependent upon the degree of complexity and number of different types of mediums used - i.e., buttercream, fondant, gumpaste, etc.
Does the price include the top tier of the cake?
No, but I do include a "honeymoon" cake free of charge for the wedding couple since I've had so many tell me afterward that they never got to eat a slice of their own wedding cake. The honeymoon cake is for them to enjoy when they have some quiet time alone together to enjoy it.
Do you offer custom cakes, or do you work with pre-designed styles?
I do custom cakes, but I also can duplicate a design if the bride wishes. I can also customize the cake to reflect designs from her wedding dress, if desired.
What (if any) special ingredients, such as fresh fruits or farm-fresh butter, do you use in your cakes?
I purchase my ingredients fresh each week for each custom-designed cake. Fresh fruits for wedding cakes (such as in a filling) don't always work well. Because wedding cakes are more detailed and take much more time than a typical party cake, and they sit a great length of time during the reception, most fillings are a cooked fruit filling to ensure a safe food product for you and your guests. Whether or not I will use a pastry cream or mousse filling depends greatly on the details of your event.
On average, how far in advance of the event do you prepare the cake?
That's totally dependent upon the size and complexity of the cake. I determine each week when I'll start a particular cake. I give myself enough time to properly prepare and deliver the freshest cake possible, with a little "breather" time to allow for any last-minute details.
How many cakes do you schedule for a typical weekend?
I have done as many as four events in a weekend, but prefer to do only two to three at the most. I enjoy the artistic side of what I do and want to prepare the best possible product for my brides and other customers.
Will you work with the client's florist to garnish the cake?
I particularly work with the bride's florist and do not allow them to add the flowers to my cakes. This is my responsibility and one I take seriously. I am aware of which flowers are toxic and non-toxic, and I prepare them in a way that they are used safely and in a food-safe manner. I work with many local florists and I will pick up the cake flowers and prepare them for use on the cake, so the bride doesn't have to worry with this any further once the flower costs are approved and paid by the bride.
What (if any) cake accessories, such as a cake stand or cake cutter, do you rent out?
Included for cakes of 100 servings minimum, I include the use of whatever cake stand I have available that works with your chosen style of cake (including several fountain cake stands) with an appropriate deposit until it has been returned in good order. I also include delivery and set-up within a 20-mile radius from the bakery, and will also decorate the cake table with fabric, tulle and lights (after a floor-length tablecloth/skirting covers the cake table.)
Do you offer delivery? If yes, how much is your average delivery fee?
Delivery is included with a cake of 100 minimum servings within a 20-mile radius from the bakery. For less than 100 servings, a delivery and set-up fee is charged depending upon distance to and from the bakery.
Additional Questions and Answers
Many times I am asked, "How much is a wedding cake?" This, unfortunately, is a question that can't be answered without much more information such as how many servings you require, what are the cake's tier shapes, regular or premium cake flavors, buttercream or fondant icing, will you need gumpaste flowers, will it need to be delivered or will you pick up, will you need a cake stand, etc. I do not offer pricing of wedding cakes over the phone, but do offer a free, no-obligation consultation and tasting for all local inquiries. If, however, you are not local to this area, you may e-mail me with contact information and once I get the information I need from you in a telephone call, I can then reasonably give you a cake quote. I have handled several previous cake orders in this manner, and they have come off flawlessly. I have done this with someone in Georgia, Pennsylvania, California, Colorado and South Florida. If you have any budget restrictions at all, it is best to let me know from the outset so I can better assist you in selecting the right cake for you. Sometimes I can suggest alternatives that are more cost-effective, but still elegant and beautiful.
Tips and Advice
An informed bride is my best customer! She has an idea of what she wants, what's out there and what she's willing to spend. If she doesn't, then she asks questions and works with me to obtain the best possible result for all concerned. If you have a color scheme you want reflected in your wedding cake, it's best to bring color samples. Although fabric colors may translate a little differently to food colors, I have been very successful in matching the desired colors as closely as possible. If you have a theme, be sure to tell your cake decorator so she can make suggestions to make your cake even more spectacular! I have done Mardi Gras and tasteful Halloween wedding themes. What will yours be? Look through internet and magazine photos to get a basic idea of what it is you're looking for - stacked, tiered or a cascade cake set-up? Do you want color on your cake, or something more traditional in white/ivory? Do you want something extravagant, or more simple and elegant? If you find some photos, it will help your cake decorator greatly and cut the amount of time you'll need to spend designing your cake. Be sure to bring these with you to your consultation and tasting so she'll have a quick idea of what it is you're looking for. If you have an absolute budget limit, your cake decorator will be thrilled if you share that with her from the outset. This allows her to try to create the best possible cake design and set-up for you, without wasting so much of your time, by knowing what she can offer you that will fulfill your desires and still allow you to stay within your budget. She's there to help, but you have to give her the information she needs. |
